AI skin-check apps: what the technology can and cannot do

AI skin-analysis apps usually rely on neural networks that have learned, from many thousands of images, to recognise patterns in skin changes. From a photo they calculate how closely a spot resembles known concerning patterns and return that as a risk level or probability. At best, this is a useful nudge to look more carefully.

What matters is what such a result is not: a diagnosis. An app does not know your history, cannot feel the lesion and cannot replace a tissue sample. It classifies an image, nothing more. There is also the matter of quality, which varies a great deal. Some apps are checked as medical devices and carry a CE mark; others are pure lifestyle apps with no meaningful validation. The greatest danger here is false reassurance. A reassuring result from an app or a photo review must not lead you to ignore a spot that is growing, bleeding, itching or changing. When in doubt, it is better to have something checked once too often than once too rarely.

Data protection and the rules: what to watch for

Reputable services are transparent that qualified doctors stand behind the assessment, name a clear responsible party, and explain in plain terms what happens to your data. Remote-only care is permitted under certain conditions but still follows a doctor's duty of care - a purely automated process with no medical responsibility behind it would be a warning sign.

With AI apps, ask about approval: is the app checked as a medical device and does it carry a CE mark, or is it purely an information tool? Either can be reasonable - you just need to know which you are dealing with. And never share more data than necessary.
