UV index: what the number tells you about the sun

The UV index is a simple number that shows how strong the sun's ultraviolet radiation is at a given place and time. The higher the value, the more intense the radiation - and the faster it can damage skin and eyes. The scale starts at 0 and, in temperate regions, usually reaches around 8, though it climbs higher in the tropics or high mountains.

The World Health Organization introduced the index together with other bodies so that UV levels are described by the same yardstick everywhere. A 7 in Manchester means the same as a 7 in Sydney. That is what makes it so useful: you can read it off any weather app and translate it straight into practical protection.

It is worth knowing what the UV index is not. It says nothing about temperature. A cool, clear April day can carry a higher value than a humid, overcast day in summer. Anyone who judges by how warm it feels tends to underestimate the radiation. That is exactly why the number exists - it makes the invisible tangible.

UV index meaning: the levels from low to extreme

The UV index is split into five bands, each with a colour and a recommendation. The bands help you place the bare number quickly, without memorising every single value.

Values of 1 and 2 are low - here you usually need no special protection. From 3 the moderate band begins (3 to 5), and from this point experts advise protecting yourself. It becomes high at 6 and 7, very high at 8 to 10, and from 11 upward the level is described as extreme, which in temperate regions is rare and mostly occurs high in the mountains.

The threshold to remember is 3. Once the UV index reaches this value, the World Health Organization advises taking protective measures. In the UK this happens regularly on sunny days from spring into autumn, and around midday in the summer months almost always.

UV index today: where to find the current value

Today you can find the UV index almost anywhere you check the weather. Most weather apps show it next to temperature and the chance of rain, often as a curve across the day with the peak around midday. In the UK the Met Office publishes a UV index forecast alongside its weather data.

The useful part is that the index is forecast, not just measured. So the evening before, you can already see what to expect around the next midday and plan your day around it - putting an outing in the early morning, say, or remembering the sunscreen. The WHO also offers its own app for this.

When you read it, look at the day's peak value, usually between noon and 3 pm. The morning or evening figure is often much lower. And bear in mind: the value given is for ground level under a clear sky. On the water, on snow or in the mountains the real exposure can be higher.

What influences the UV index

The UV index varies for several reasons, many of them easy to picture. The most important is the sun's position. The higher the sun sits in the sky, the shorter the path its rays take through the atmosphere and the more strongly they arrive at the ground. That is why the value peaks around midday and is greater in high summer than in winter.

Location matters too: closer to the equator and at greater altitude, UV exposure is stronger. In the mountains it rises with every metre of height, because the protective layer of air grows thinner. Then there is reflection. Snow, pale sand and water surfaces bounce part of the radiation back, so your skin also catches it from below - one reason people burn so easily when skiing or at the beach.

A widespread myth concerns clouds. Light or thin cloud holds back only a small share of UV, and on some days it can even raise the value briefly. Clouds are not something to rely on. Finally, the ozone layer shapes the UV index, since it filters part of the radiation out of the sunlight before it reaches the ground.

Snow, water and light sand reflect UV back onto the skin, on top of what comes from above. This is why sunburn is so common on the ski slope and at the beach, even when a breeze makes the air feel cool.

UV radiation protection: acting on the UV index

The whole point of the UV index is that you adapt your behaviour to it. The protective measures stay the same; only their urgency changes. At low values of 1 and 2 you can enjoy your time outdoors freely. From 3 it is worth seeking shade around midday and putting sunscreen on exposed skin.

When the index turns high or very high, from 6 upward, several measures should come together: avoid the strong midday sun between roughly 11 am and 3 pm, cover the body with clothing, a hat and sunglasses, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sufficiently high SPF to exposed skin. It matters that you use enough and reapply after swimming or sweating.

Children deserve a second look. Their skin is more sensitive, and sunburns early in life raise the later risk of skin cancer. Babies should be kept out of direct sun altogether. The eyes need protection too: sunglasses that block UV belong with high values.

Why the UV index matters for early detection

UV radiation is the most important avoidable risk factor for skin cancer. That is true for the common non-melanoma skin cancers and for the more dangerous melanoma alike. The NHS and dermatologists point out that the radiation damages the DNA in skin cells - and that this damage builds up over the years.

It is not only the single sunburn that counts, even though frequent sunburns in childhood do raise the risk in particular. It is the total UV dose a skin receives over a lifetime. The UV index helps you keep that dose deliberately low, because it makes the invisible exposure visible and shows when caution pays off.

Protection and early detection go hand in hand. Guarding against UV lowers your risk, but it does not replace keeping an eye on your own skin. Watch for new or changing spots, and take up the skin checks offered to you.

Common myths about the UV index

A few stubborn misunderstandings surround UV. The first: on a cloudy day I need no protection. In fact, thin cloud lets most of the radiation through, and sunburn is possible even under an overcast sky. The second concerns temperature. Because UV does not warm you, people often burn on a cool, clear day without noticing.

Behind glass, too, you are less safe than you feel. Window glass does block most UVB, but the longer-wave UVA passes through - in the car, on the train or by a window. And the classic: that a tan is a healthy natural defence. A tan is always the response to UV that has already reached the skin, so it is a sign of strain, not health.

Finally, many think darker skin needs no UV protection. It is a little less sensitive, but not immune - skin cancer occurs in every skin type. The UV index applies to everyone, and the advice to protect yourself from a value of 3 changes with skin type only in degree, not in principle.
